Endowed vs. Non-Endowed Funds
At the Peninsula Community Foundation, charitable funds can be structured in different ways depending on your goals, timeline, and the kind of impact you want to make. Every fund at PCF is either endowed or non-endowed. Both allow donors, families, businesses, and nonprofits to support the causes they care about. The key difference is how the money is used over time.
Endowed Funds: Giving That Lasts Forever
An endowed fund is designed to provide permanent support. The original gift, and any gifts that flow into the fund in the future (called the principal) is invested, and a portion of the investment earnings from the fund is made available each year for grants, scholarships, or other charitable purposes.
Because the fund is intended to last in perpetuity, endowed funds are a powerful way to create a lasting legacy for your family, organization, or community.
Endowed funds are a good fit if you want to:
-
Create long-term support for a cause, nonprofit, scholarship, or community need
-
Establish a permanent charitable legacy
-
Provide steady annual funding over time
-
Support future generations across the Peninsula
Non-Endowed Funds: Flexible Giving for Today’s Needs
A non-endowed fund offers great flexibility. Gifts are still invested and managed by the Foundation, but the full fund amount - gifts and investment earnings - may be used for charitable purposes over time.
This type of fund can function more like a charitable “savings” account, allowing donors or nonprofit organizations to make grants or use the full fund in response to needs and initiatives as they arise.
Non-endowed funds are a good fit if you want to:
- Respond to current community needs
- Have access to both fund principal and earnings for giving purposes
- Establish a fund without a permanent endowment structure
Which Fund Is Right for You?
The best choice depends on your charitable goals. An endowed fund is ideal if you want your giving to continue forever. A non-endowed fund may be better if you want flexibility to support needs now or over a shorter period of time.
Many donors and organizations use both approaches: one fund for long-term sustainability and another for more immediate giving and response.
